Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert have been making music in San Francisco for more than 20 years. Their band, Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, plays all around the Bay Area, pretty much all the time. Chris and Lavay also do regular gigs at the Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge every Sunday. In Part 1, Chris and Lavay discuss how the band got started, the SF music scene of the late-1980s, and some interesting experiences they've had in nightclub basements.
In Part 2, they talk about an unusual business meeting they had, the time they played for Bill Clinton's Saxophone Club, and the time in 1992 when they went to see Solomon Burke at Slim's. Lavay shares the story of the Swing for Choice benefit show she did with Ledisi, and she laments further on how San Francisco nightclubs used to be run.
That's it for Storied: San Francisco in 2017. Thanks so much for listening and helping to spread the word. We have a lot of great new things planned for 2018, so please stay tuned. Happy New Year! We recorded this podcast at the Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge in November 2017.
