Jan Yanehiro defied familial pressures to follow her dream. In Part 1, Jan traces her story back to Hawaii, where she grew up a third-generation Japanese-American. She braved upsetting her parents to go to college in California, and after a short stint as a flight attendant following graduation, she came to San Francisco and got a job at a local radio station.
In a way, Jan's career has come full circle.
In Part 2, Jan traces her work in Bay Area broadcast journalism, from humble beginnings in radio to hosting a nationally syndicated show for more than a decade. After leaving the field, the Academy of Art University asked Jan to establish and run its Multimedia Communications department, where she's been director for 12 years now. We recorded this podcast at the Urban Knights Studio in March 2020.
